30 MARCH 2020

These are unprecedented times of global turmoil. The prognosis for the COVID-19 outbreak is still fraught with uncertainty. Perhaps “our fastest hour” would have been a more apt title. Never has a situation moved so quickly, never has the feed of information been so congested, never has there been so little consensus among governments as to how to tackle such a rapidly escalating crisis.

This will pass. Before that, however, it will cause a significant amount of death and destruction. The only questions are to what extent this damage will occur, and to what extent countries will be able to recover. This depends on the speed, ingenuity and execution of each government’s response. South Africa’s has been comparatively bold, swift and extensive.

Now, will it work?
